Our First Day of School
Even though we never really stopped school for the summer, we, like many of the other families across the nation, had our first day of school.
Now that we have a seminary student, we actually have to pay attention to the school district's calendar. He actually starts, tomorrow, September 6th, but we thought we could give a trial run to what is going to be a pretty heavy scheduled day.
I have usually frowned on a schedule, but this year I am teaching six different grades and they all need my time and attention. We have had to break the day up and have a schedule. I'm sure that soon it will be set aside for good, but we will give it a try. I also know that we will spend the next couple of weeks fine tuning, tweaking and trying to make it work for us.
My school day started at 5:25 when my alarm went off way too early. On a typical day, I will be going downstairs and making sure Kray is awake and getting ready to go to seminary, but today, I wanted to see how long I get to work out before I'm "late" in picking him up.
So, I grabbed my bag and took a drive; first to see how long it takes to travel to the church, to the gym and back home. I found out I have about 30 minutes to work out, spend 5 in the steam bath, quick shower and then a quick blow dry (my hair is so thin if I didn't dry it, it would dry funny on the way home). I then "picked Kray up" from seminary and made it home by 7:20. That gives me 10 minutes to put on make-up and get ready for the day.
I need to time this all for two reasons. 1. I need to make sure I don't leave Kray waiting in the cold come December and 2. At 7:30 we have our family scripture time. I know that I can now make it and still have 10 minutes to spare. WHEW!
We then spend 30 minutes as a family reading the Doctrine and Covenants (so we are reading along with the seminary students). We then have a 30 minutes Portuguese lesson. Steve went to Brazil on his mission so he pulled his missionary language book and is teaching us how to speak! It is kind of fun to use our three new phrases all day long.
This takes us to 8:30 in the morning. We then have a 30 minute break for the kids to finish getting dressed, breakfast, put books away, or whatever they need to do to be ready for the day.
Here is where each day differs. Depending on the day we either get together now for our together school (unit study, mini lessons, or whatever is needed) or have special one on one time with me.
Today, was a trial run, so we did a lot of introducing the new stuff. Kray and Jason have a couple new "text" books and they needed to get introduced to them and how they work. Likewise the younger children did as well.
One thing that we are carrying over from the end of last year is our contracts. Right now I'm just getting a fell of what the kids can and can't do in a week. Of course this week, we are going a bit light on the school load.
We ended the day like we have for the past three weeks--at the soccer field.
