Friday Fun--week in review
Today I'm still not feeling up to snuff, but I must continue on. We are hosting a Valentine's Party for my support group this afternoon. So this morning we cleaned up the house and got the downstairs ready for 40 plus kids. I had to put together a few crafts so that there was an example ready and that was actually fun. For the Christmas party my son put them together while I cleaned, but today we switched.

Since that took the whole morning (we slept in because I didn't get any sleep last night) we barely got lunch done when they started knocking on the door.

We made crafts, did word searches, decorated cookies, had a Valentine type story about loving each other and had some of the children play the piano or sing. It was a great time.

My oldest two then did their weekly skiing class (they are assistant teachers up at a local resort). The younger ones and I went shopping, which was a disaster when you consider they were loaded with sugar.

We ended the night watching a movie and the Olympics.

Some may say that I rely heavily on TV. Well, it would be right for this week, but that is because I'm not feeling well. I have had no voice since Monday morning and it is very difficult to teach when you can't be heard. I feel awful about it, but it has been years since this has happened for this long. Last time it dragged on this long was the week after my accident, but then my mother was here and she kept the kids busy. (I don't remember any of that since I had a concussion.) And before that, was when I was pregnant with my then 10 year old and I thought I was having a miscarriage. But if you go back 10 years, my oldest was only 4 then.

Let me put your mind at ease and lets think about the things my kids learned this week--a week with a "substitute."

Monday they learned that it was not a good idea to put off a 30 poem poetry notebook until the last minute. They learned how to spell a lot of words since they had to type their poems out. Since I had a very soft voice, they learned they had to listen carefully or look at my hands as I hand spelled the words in ASL. They learned to use a Dictionary, Thesaurus and a Rhyming dictionary. They learned how to format word documents so that they look right when they are printed. And we can't forget the science project we did.

Tuesday was our enrichment day and they all learned something interesting in their classes.

Wednesday we learned about curling, hockey, Vikings, Bears. I know Chris has been reading his books because they have been rotated. He claimed that Jason has been helping him.

Thursday we talked about the founding of the US and the first three presidents.

Friday we learned about service and enjoyment.

Now from the Olympics we have learned geography and topography. We have learned a lot about courage when we see the little side stories about what trials the athletes have gone through or are going through. We have talked about the cold war and what freedoms where taken away.

Something else I will take from this week that is quite special to me. My kids are looking at things and writing poems about them on the spot. It has been a joy to see them do it. They are looking at things in a different light.
